People find the unseeing mist called fog as romantic, mysterious and sometimes beautiful. However, when the fog becomes smoke, it takes on an entirely different meaning even though it creates almost the same effect. There's nothing romantic or beautiful about a fire to people who have dedicated their lives to fight them. When they arrive at a fire they wonder if there is anyone trapped within its smokey confines. They fight to extinguish the fire as quickly as possible and spring into action to rescue anyone who might be trapped. Firemen and Ground Zero took on a whole new meaning after September 11, 2001. An awareness was brought to everyone plus a deep respect for those who gave of their lives then; and also the ones that put their lives on the line daily. Scenes like this occur all over the world everyday. I don't think a tribute is unreasonable.

Think you have to delete the word 'small' for tribute in the last sentence Tick!
Excellent action shot my friend!

You were right Cornelius--I deleted the word small that made the line read: I don't think a small tribute is unreasonable.

Know what you're talking about here Tick. My brother retired due to a fall he took while fighting a fire in DC many years ago. Your image here is quite moving for those you've been "there". Great post!

I don't know of anything that is more scary than a house fire. This past July, one of my neighbors house burned down, and when I went out and first saw it burning, I had no idea if they were still in there or not. My heart about fell to my feet. Luckily, everyone got out. Your picture reminds me of that day, and the feeling of helplessness. Nice tribute to the firefighters. You captured the scene very well. Good job, Tick.

Tick this is beautiful! My Grandfather was a firefighter for a great many years. Fire fighters are a unique breed of person, and are in my eyes real heroes. Here in the UK today we had a memorial held for four comrades killed whilst at a warehouse fire. To find this wonderful tribute in my friends list today adds special meaning to both.

Excellent Tick! This is an outstanding photograph with the fireman so bright and sharply in focus yet there is smoke and fog all around them! ....and without saying the narrative is good too - always poignant and leaving the viewer to ponder.

Tick I'm very impressed with this tribute. It cannot be said enough how hard they strive to put out fires and save our loved ones and even our pets. Tick I'll never forget the scene on TV of 911. I just wish people would remember more what that day was like, some seem to forget. I hope to vote on this one!
You have done a fine job of the overall composition, detail, and color and clarity. Tigz♥

Your picture has captured the heroics of the firemen very well and one can only sense the fear and misery being handled by the people who's life possessions are behind the smoke. You have another well done photo journal shot.

Tick, the colors in the foreground against the billowing smoke make an already captivating capture a spectaclar tribute! Ironic in light of the news out of Las Vegas this evening.

This should be required reading for people everywhere!

A well-done tribute in deed, my friend. As has been said, your narrative and photo bring us all face to face with the reality of tragedy and the heroism of those who battle it in a most poignant way.

Hi Tick..this is quite a capture neighbor. you were spot on with your composition shooting into the smoke and showing the hoses as they were dropped off the trucks and then we can see the master streams pouring water into the inferno.
My son would be one of those holding the hose...he is here in St. Louis and truly dedicated to his job. (our other son is a policeman:)..
The job of a firefighter is truly one that is to be recognized and respected..they are the ones running into a burning building as others are running out. Nowhere else was this so dramatically demonstrated as it was on 9-11. 343 of my son's brother's and sisters gave their lives that day in the hope that others could live :(. The motto of the firefighter is 'Protect property and save lives". When they die in the line of duty, it is called 'the ultimate sacrifice'.
Bless you for posting this. In my favorites it goes ;=)
