This statue is located in Evansville, Indiana. It is part of the Public Art walking tour. The artist was Abbott Pattison and the marble sculpture weighs over four tons and was done in 1961. It is an abstract personification of nature. The earth mother looks out to the Ohio River.

I found the original background distracting and decided to use this free texture from Digital Photo magazine to show it off. You can see the original here.

I suspect with all the bad weather in the U.S. this winter; there have been many sculptures made from snow to depict how folks feel about nature. Luckily they will melt away by Spring while this beauty will remain.

Well..the 'human' statues wouldn't be larking about in the snow with no clothes on!... Things? would drop off!

A neat piece of work with changing the background!

nice one mate

The thing with marble statues is once you make a error; you simply improvise. Four tons is a huge piece of rock. Nice job with the background TicK.

The sculpture looks good against the background you gave it Tick. Weather is playing havoc all over the world recently causing so much destruction and misery. Mother earth has become angry it seems.

The sculpture looks so much better with your background Tic.

Thanks for leaving us a link to the original location as it gives us a good sense of it's scale. "Earth Mother" is a good description for this art piece which I personally think has a timeless quality, thanks for sharing. (o:

You have done a superb job on changing the background, and what a beautiful statue this is. I think mother nature is angry at us, and telling us something in a grand scale. Tigz♥ =^..^=

No questions about why you laid in a new background, Tick. There was nothing wrong with your original composition though.
The needed space in the direction they're facing is gone, and the space above the statue is many times greater.
It makes a significant difference in the subject's impact.

You've made a proper choice OFT (Owd Fella Tick). The lush green in the original version asks too much attention from the viewer. The result of your treatment is that only the statue gets the full attention.

Hope however that this one won't melt when Spring arrives in the USA, lol.

Thanks for this fine image Ron!

In Greek mythology, fertility statues, much like this one, were placed in the fields to encourage the gods to grant healthy and plentiful crops. The rendering of this fertility statue has brought in a crop of enjoyment from all who have seen it.

I agree that the original background does detract from the statue however the original background does give a sense of scale.

amazing piece of work! both yours & the original. i really like the background colors you chosen. just the shear magnitude of this sculpture is amazing in itself. looking at in person must be a sight to graze upon. cant help to wonder with all the time that went into sculpting this piece what one would do if they slipped up & cracked off a major piece of it. start over, turn it into something else, or just sit down & cry, probably all of the above. not like they had a stepback or redo editing button.
