Taking basketball photos in poorly lit gymns has always been a problem for me. I bought a Nikkor Prime 50mm f/1.8D lens a couple of years ago and my shots have improved. After much experimenting, I have found that setting the Nikon D7000 on the sports mode, ISO to 6400 and just shooting away seems to work the best. That way I don't have to use a flash which the officials frown on.

That is my grandson #1, as he shoots a jump shot and scores in a basketball tournament last night. Just thought I would share some info with you and sneak my grandson into a shot.

This action shot is, without doubt, captured by a proud granddad.
Small grandkids have become tall ones Tick. My grandson #1 meanwhile is grown even taller than I am, but I'm - even for him self-evident - the 'captain', lol.

Thanks for this very fine shot Owd Fella!

Tick, I suppose he will be playing for Mizzou in the future. When he does, I will look for him on the cover of Sports Illustrated...the picture taken by you, of course. Excellent work with that high ISO.

Nice action shot of your grandson scoring for his team Tick. Even with the high ISO there is no noise to be seen.

Sharp details and no noise can't do much than that on a sports shot Tick - I'm surprised at that ISO. But I'm a fan of Nikon's pre-programmed modes.

He is going to go far in the basketball world. Making the jump shot and doing the Michael Jordan tongue is clear evidence of that ;)

I know it's hard to take photos in a gym, but this is a great one, specially as he scored and made you proud. Nice one.

I have my camera set on 'Sports' mode quite frequently!...especially where animals and people are prominent!....

You got a good 'action' capture here....another one for you 'family' album eh!

Very well done Tick - both you and your grandson. Beautiful clarity on the pic and your grandson has a great jump. I am sure you are proud of him :)

I watched some basketball today - our NZ Breakers won the championship in the Australian NBL competition !A new player Ekene Ibekwe who is a professional from your country jumped and dropped a tie breaking shot at the end - very exciting.

Your shutter setting was spot on when you took this photo it as froze the action superbly and the colours are amazing too. This is one of the cameras that I use and love it to bits.

Please confirm the boy on the right is your #1 grandson, looks like he's levitating. (o: I'd prefer to see more of the left frame so that the 3rd boy isn't cut up.
A good action shot though Tic, it seems you've got the indoor sports setting on your Nikon well sussed!

Does his tongue help him make the baskets, lol. Superb action shot and great lighting. I've always used the Sport mode but have to try the ISO setting to 6400, thanks for that info.
