I actually took this image last fall. The Mantis lays eggs in a ball of foam. The foam hardens and the eggs survive the winter to hatch out 150 to 300 little guys in the spring when the temperature gets to be in the 70s. They immediately start to eat each other until they regulate their numbers according to the insects in the area. we went out last winter and gathered several egg cases for our garden. They make a great natural insect control and don't eat any plants! What could be better! This gal is actually about 4 inches long.

Loris, I think this is fascinating. A unique capture and wonderful image. Your narrative is a good example of Mother Nature and how things can be controlled naturally. Wonderful find and image. I have not seen a one of these unique insects in such a long time. =^..^= sandi ♪
