This is a picture of the Christ Our Saviour Cathedral in Moscow. Simply beautiful building. I think someone said that several thousand pounds (If not several hundred thousand pounds) of gold went into the construction. See the domes? That is gold, not gold colored stuff. Inside there is even more gold. Gold on everything. Unfortunately, they would not allow us to take pictures inside. That didn't stop me in the Russian Metro either, but unlike the metro, (Strangely enough) there were security guards walking around the inside of the church making sure no one took pictures. I guess they didn't want anyone having a picture of an Icon they could pray to without paying the fee. The title is from a Bible passage where Jesus refers to the Pharisees as Whited Sepulchers, clean and beautiful on the outside, but filled with dead men's bones.

This is a beautiful structure and the architecture is awesome Caiden. You've captured it with clarity and great colors. So glad you shared the post and the wonderful writeup.

Perhaps you thought, when you titled this, that there were no Russians here, and/or no Russian Orthodox Christians.

There are in that cathedral the bones of a martyr, whom we believe to be very much alive with Christ. All the other bones in there are clothed with flesh and blood, belonging as they do to people who find within this holy house healing, great transformation, new Life, and unspeakable Love.

And we do not pray to icons.

I did not think for a moment that there weren't any Russian orthodox christians on this site. If you wonder why I said this, I'd be happy to discuss it with you over the P.M. I wrote what I wrote, because I believe the Bible is true. I do not wish to put down your religion merely to make you angry, or to make myself look smarter, but I do believe the majority of people praying in that cathedral, are lost. The church has given them many nice traditions and empty prayers to say, but they have not given them true hope and assurance of an eternity with Christ. Just works which they can perform. I do not fault the people who have been pulled into such a lie, but I love them deeply, and wish to do something to help them. If you wonder why I believe as I do, I would be glad to discuss it with you. God Bless.

This is a beautiful structure, but I believe you are right Caiden, all that gold takes the focus off of what should be the reason for having a church.
It is a place of worship, a place to worship God, and God alone... we have to ask ourselves "why so much gold, why take the attention away from God in a place dedicated to him?" and Anastasia, I think Caiden wanted to do just that, not attack Orthodox Christians, or say that they're not sincere, no one can judge that but God. I don't know what this church is like inside, but if it's anything like what we have here in France, with statues of different saints, candles lit beside them (next to a box of money), how can we say that this brings glory to God, and God alone? God asks to have all our adoration, all our prayers. Cathedrals covered in gold may bring prestige to a country, a city, but in so doing, leads the people astray, and leads their eyes away from God.
I also am willing to discuss this more, but don't misunderstand, I am truly sad for these people.

A wonderful church and a great capture of it with wonderful light and colors. I only think, it is hanging a bit to the right ...

I have been to Moscow several times and Russians told me that quite often the members of the maffia give the money to restore these churches. They want to ease their conscience... I do agree with Caiden and Jesouris. Bible tells all.
