In the Alsace region of eastern France the relatively little-known Battle of the Colmar Gap or Colmar Pocket took place (winter of 1944-45). It was the last piece of French territory held by the Germans. This memorial, between the Rhine and the Vosges Mountains, is on a hill where American forces fought hard against German troops. The hill was taken and re-taken several times before American and French forces pushed the Germans out. With Memorial Day near, I thought this would be a good image to remember American veterans, especially those of WW II. The city of Colmar is in the background.
