No, I mean around the space station, especially the white section, there is a sort of grey haze...

Mmm. Must be the lighting or something. If I remember correctly this was taken during the approach of the space shuttle to the ISS, but I have no idea why it looks like it does.

At first I thought someone had edited it, you know made the background more black, and hadn't "cut out" the station very carefully...

Ah, now I see. Well, unless NASA dit some photoshop work themselves it seems that it is a natural effect. I only resized it, didn't do anything more.
