Looking a bit like the Badlands of the Dakotas, this patch of eroded land in the Pony Hills near Deming, NM, is a perfect example of the results of over-grazing. When the vegetation is destroyed, the soil begins to wash away. Moisture once retained below the surface drains off into the resulting arroyos, causing more plants to die and more erosion to occur.

Makes me think of the "Dust Bowl," during the depression; although this hasn't quite reached that point.
