Depression hurts everyone. I've worked with depression as a therapist for many years and the good news is that current treatments are, for most people, extremely effective once your dosages are titrated properly. Sadly many people are trapped in the darkness unable to try treatment for fear it will not work. This is dedicated to all with the courage who have overcome. BTW you really have to look at this one full size.

Very cool manipulation Peter, the texturing and tones have a realistic and genuine depth and the image conveys a powerful message indeed.

I agree with philc completely. As a depression sufferer, it's great to see someone who understands and knows what they are talking about. And a good artist on top of that - great gallery you have!

A picture says a thousand words here, great work, very striking. This may be the work that inspires someone to seek help, well done.

To be so filled with pain yet with no means to express it ... a most profoundly sad state. This image is emotional, striking and very very compelling. Well done indeed.

This is a very powerful shot and one that is far out of my capabilities. i love the effect here it looks so real. What software do you use? I have always wanted to do stuff like this but when I try, I always make a mess with my software lol.

Good job.

Johncastle, it's not difficult, just a bit time consuming and you need a bit of an eye to place the damage so to speak. I used only photoshop, a portrait of a woman and some rust images. I used a combination of overlay and lumiscence for compositing and I did a lot of cross image cloning. Go for it, I know you can do it.

Interesting picture expertly created and very relevant to the subject.
However, I would not want to have this on my desktop, even though I appreciate it as a wonderful portrayal of a wicked and all too often misunderstood illness.

I agree this would be a distressing desktop, but as a work of art to be NOT dwelled upon, I found it an interesting project. The symbolism got to me as I created it. It left me drained, but purged. Twenty years of working with depression leaves one with a residue that sometimes needs to be looked at.

Did anyone notice the tear?

Very effective picture. Haunting eyes on that person. Depression leaves a person completely removed from what they were.

Despiet the subject matter and the garishness, which may cause some to label it "depressing" (which an object does not have the power to do, by the way), it is remarkable in that it mirrors a stae of mind well and is quiet an achievement both technically and artistically. Just superb. Alain

The teardrop was on the subtle side... I see it (I think ^_^) now that you mention it. Powerful piece indeed. There's little to add to the critique above. You definitely strike a nerve with this wonderful manipulation. If I get lucky I'll be working with depression (etc...) the next twenty years. I find the field utterly and totally fascinating.

I will say it's interesting and probably a great piece of art but.......I felt it to be like a scarey Halloween background that I'd use if I liked that type, which I don't. I've suffered from depression for quite some time, and this really bothered me for some reason, maybe it's because of the burned look of her skin. BTW, I am under treatment for it...:)

As a Survivor with lifelong PTSD I find this image very evocative and haunting. Depression erodes the spirit so deeply. Your symbolism is right on. Happily, with the right meds and a lotta help I'm on my way! May I use your image to illustrate one of my poems?

Someone earlier mentioned that the eyes are untouched. It's true...to me it gives the impression that she is still in there, fighting to regain her life.

Well done and I would really like to be able to do that effect. Choosing a skin design for faces, cars, animals, etc looks so good, esp when used right such as with this photo
