Sometimes I feel like I trap myself in unrealistic expectations and blame it on circumstances, shortcomings, or other people; however, the reality is that my own perfectionism is what causes me to be trapped in a cycle of self-doubt and second-guesses. That's what this portrait is about. Self-portrait for my Drawing 1 class. Not too happy with the hands or the proportion of the legs, but I think the face/shirt/feet turned out well. And yes, I really did this pose for the photo reference.

Very nicely done. Drawing a person can be very hard..that's one thing I did horrible with in art class. Love the mood and tone to this. The leg on the left side looks a little wide and washed out. Maybe adding some shading to this might help. Again, that just my little humble opinion.

Very interesting; to minimize the face in a frame of arms and legs seems to convey humility/vulnerability, yet there's a tension with the feet up combined with the lateral shading at the upper right that conveys the feeling of falling. Well done.

An interesting image. Most of the problems seem to be on the left side of the image. Additional shading on the leg would help define it better perhaps. One hand is too square in shape, the other looks fine. Nice work on the rest of the image. Thanks for sharing.

In order to discover who you are, first learn who everybody else is; you're what's left.

Thanks everyone :) Eubeen: I definitely agree that the left side is the weakest part of the image, I noticed that as soon as I saw it on the computer. Hopefully I'll do another version of this, employing some of the critique and observations that I've heard/seen.

I think the whole fact that you can get into a position like this says a lot!! Geez if I managed to do this I would be stuck this way for eternity.
I agree with Eubeen and I think possibly the shading on the right might be a little dark. The face and hands are really defined! I so wish I could draw like this!It would be nice to see more of your work;)

Paul-

Staying true to the original photo required that the right be as dark as it is (I'll put a link up to it when I can scan it). That said, the contrast is so stark because there wasn't enough shading on the left side of the image, making the right side appear too dark, so your observation is a good one.
