I love this ancient structure, I've read a lot about them, maybe that's why I love them. It's made of stone, but it's somehow warm, tender...Or maybe just for me? Thanks, Ed.
A great sense of mystery you've created here, Ed. What's under that arch and round the corner? The lost legion of Tiberius!!!
Great details in the stones and clouds too.
Ed - This was built to stand the test of time! The wall construction is so tight, it is no wonder that it still stands. Having the hillside across the valley, and the beautiful sky to give perspective to this portal path is wonderful composition. Excellent work! Thad
Isn't it wonderful to have timeless places such as this?!! I love how it looks and feels. It's very enjoyable the way you took the photo of the large wall on the right and then showing the smaller part. Oh and that sky is just wonderful. Another special photo Edoardo..thank you so much..Verena
Those stones are very heavy, I think. The capstone (over the path) must weigh several tons. Interesting to imagine how primitive people could fit these stones so precisely (no mortar) so that they stand even today. Fascinating place.
I always find places like this so intriguing, picturing in my mind how prehistoric people might have used simple machines to lift and place massive stones like that lintel. That, and how they figured out how to keep them from collapsing. Structures like this can go back a long ways -- Stonehenge may be as old as 4,800 years -- so it would be interesting to know if the people who raised this lintel used tongue and groove as a construction element. As always, Ed, you capture ancient architecture like no one else. Excellent shot.
