Sermoneta is a medieval village with high walls round it with semicylindrical towers and with a majestic and well-preserved castle. Sermoneta probably dates back to Roman times and belonged to the Church in the XII century. In 1222 it was a fief of the Annibaldi family and in 1297 was bought by the Caetani family. The Caetani castle is one of the most famous examples of defensive architecture in Latium. The primary structure was probably built in the XI century; the outside of the castle is composed of rampants and "camminamenti" which surround the central nucleus arranged round a courtyard with a well. It is composed of a "mastio" with a majestic tower of the XIII century, a building which dates back to the XV century and a fortress (the house of the cardinal). Its interior still treasures some medieval furniture. Two rooms are particulary note worthy, as they were beautifully frescoed perhaps by a pupil of Pinturicchio, the long passage called "La Grande Batteria" and the vast stable. The building's original architects are unknown but the enlargement during the Borgia, were carried out by Antonio Da Sangallo the Elder, a military designer who also built Nettuno, Civita Castellana and the fortress of Nepi.

Very inventive to capture the panorama from inside the castle Ed, as you've combined two wonderful subjects in one image now, so creating a special atmosphere.
I've enjoyed your very interesting narrative as well.
Very good work again, my friend.
Regards, Cornelius.

Like Cornelius said, you've combined two pictures in one. Great work, Ed, and an intersting narrative too.

Ed - Exceptional work to present this scene so well. The ancient walls and window frame the view of the countryside. Outstanding! Thad
