After an extensive online check I was finally able to identify these mysterious birds as cowbirds. They moseyed into the yard a week or so ago and seem to be tame enough. I had a try at milking them the other day. Not as difficult as I would have thought. Branding them on the other hand proved to be a bit more difficult. The branding iron was much larger than they are.

Hilarious, Wendell. You might want to stay out of the sun for a couple of days and drink plenty of liquids. Not milk of course.
