That "treatment" really enhanced the character of the building, similar to "Poster Edge" in Photoshop. When my mother was a child, she and her parents and eight of her eventual 18 siblings lived in a place very much like this. Dirt poor, they moved many times throughout her youth. It was an example of what effect the (not so) Great Depression had on people; my grandmother's father was a millionaire, and had a huge white mansion (which burned to the ground), and owned about half of our county in farmland. As bad as this place might have been for a family of eleven to live in, prior to that they had to spend about 5 months living in a corn crib, stuffing the holes between the lattice with paper debris and knobs or prairie grass to keep the wind and blowing dirt out. Like my native North Dakota, there's many places around the country that this structure could be found but they usually don't look this good in photographs.
