These are tenement buildings from a trip i took to Edinburgh last year. They get the accolade of Worlds First Skyscraper. These buildings just used to be one roomed houses with an alleyway down the middle but space was so scarce in Edinburgh during the 1800's that people just kept building one room on top of another and another. Some of these buildings were up to 14 storeys high. This is all that is left of them but i liked the texture and the history so thought i would post. Now that the C-Index is gone please be honest and constructive with your comments. Many Thanks :)

I think you did a good job on capturing their old look, the textures, and colors are also very good. Nice job on this one. Thanks for the good narrative as well. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Thanks for sharing this diamond on the rough.
This is one of the most interesting photos I have seen in awhile.
Really a job well done.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, Rachel, but I don't see much that I would change about your image. The focus looks great, the colors seem true and the subject matter is very provocative. I'm not sure if this is possible because I don't know what's behind you, but I would like to see a bit more of the upper stories and those wild stairways. Personally I would have cloned out the metallic sign pole in the center bottom of the shot. If this one were in the VB, I'd give it a 7+. The shot is excellent, but the "wow" factor is lacking. Once you figure out how to get Mt. Everest into this shot, it's a sure fire 9.

I used to moan and bitch about the VB and the C-Index although it sometimes served a useful purpose. It was a flawed system that could have been fixed by requiring that the knuckleheads, who voted 0's and 1's on every shot, write a few words of explanation about what they didn't like. Either that or reveal who they were. Now you have to assume that we're being honest. I'll do my best.

A very intriguing picture and narative. Being a fan of the site, There I Fixed It, it is right up my alley. Everything is so "bashed" together; the pipes on the wall, oddly placed windows, an engineer's nightmare. I do agree about the metal pole, as it is distracting, it is a bit of a challenge to get a perspective. But a great job all the same.

A nice capture of this old building, Rachel. Nice textures and colours in the stonework and wooden shutters. An interesting narrative, it made me go look up more info on the Royal Mile to see if I could find this particular building.

The difference between a bad artist and a good one is: the bad artist seems to copy a great deal; the good one really does. ~William Blake

At first I thought those lined patterns near the top were steps but I realized there were no risers and it was shingles I was looking at. Obviously photographed out of direct sunlight, possibly later in the day with the sun behind the structures, the colors and tones of the individual building stones (that's right, folks, stones, not concrete blocks--look close!), rain drainage down the stones over time, the drain pipes, and windows are fabulous here. I really enjoy how one's eye can take the separate blocks of window panes and group them as one, seeing the entire sky reflected (or not, as in the case of the lower windows), understanding where a light cloud starts to break into the lower left corner of one group, as well as the group above. This is one of those photos that makes the viewer think, and any photo that can do that is exceptional.
