Bison (sometimes referred to as the Prairie Cow) is a taxonomic group containing six species of large even-toed ungulates within the subfamily Bovinae. Only two of these species still exist: the American Bison (B. bison) and the European Bison, or wisent (B. bonasus). In American Western culture, the bison is commonly referred to as "buffalo"; however, this is a misnomer. Though both bison and buffalo belong to the same family, Bovidae, the term 'buffalo' properly applies only to the Asian Water Buffalo and African Buffalo. The gaur, a large, thick-coated ox found in Asia, is also known as the Indian Bison, although it is in the genus Bos and thus not a true bison.

He's a BIG brute! He looks docile though. You caught him in a good position. They raise these on a ranch in Amherst, MA too. I should stop sometime and see these guys. Weren't they endangered for awhile?

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

what a huge animal! He might have his head to the right but he is definitely giving you a warning look there! lol! Don't be fooled by the docile expression on his face! Good capture Randy - would like to maybe see a little bit more of his face, but could be the settings on my pc!

We have a small, private park up here with a few of these critters as well, and I know of a farmer who raises beefalo, which is a cross between these guys and regular cattle. I also found some information about the cattalo breed as well. While it's all very interesting, they're still good enough to eat...beefalo, I mean :)

BIG tatanka! Wow, we're very lucky to be able to enjoy seeing these critters. They were slaughtered by the millions by white hunters in the 1800's, mostly as a way to deprive the Native Americans of their way of life. The Plains Indians depended on the bison for their own existence. Once the bison were gone, so were the Indians... a very sad part of our history.
Thanks, Randy, for this beautiful image :-)))
