Why do the pictures come out square when the lens is round??

Irises are (to me) a love/hate thing. Some of them are so gorgeous, like this one, or they're so bedraggled looking that you wonder why they are shaped as they are. I love the two-toned look of this one, and it helps that your capture is spot on!
