I think you are right about that being a cowbird. They are "cheaters." They lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, then leave. When the eggs hatch, the baby birds are so much more agressive and larger than the "legitimate" babies, that the cowbird babies survive but the others die from lack of food, or are pushed out of the nest.
