While in D.C. in the winter of 2006, I captured this picture while paying my respects. I am an active duty Marine, Iraq and Afghanistan veteran, and believe it is every American's duty to at least honor the brave men who laid down their lives for our Constitution. Freedom is not free.

Not only for your constitution. Only yesterday, another fellow Dutch soldier was flown in, killed in Afganistan by a bomb placed at the side of the road. Deaths are adding up, while we eat our big macs and drink our diet coke in the free world at home. Freedom only exists because of our man and woman in armed forces. Next time i am in the states and Washington, i will make a stop at the WW2 memorial. Respect where respect is due.

Good shot, on an appropriately gloomy day, a single person (veteran??) looking at the monument.

Superb. As the father of an Army 10th Mountain Soldier (15 months in Afghanastan - Jalalabad - and due to leave for Iraq this December) I salute you for your service and for this very well done tribute. I have a few tributes of my own, as well as a story you may be interested in. Starting here and working your way backward is probably the easiest way to do it.

I will be visiting Washington D.C. next June and look forward to visiting the wall when I am there. I have seen the traveling wall twice and cannot imagine how moving the one you portray so well here must be.

I salute you Sir and thank you for this post.

Beautiful tribute. I like the overcast sky. My oldest daughter has been serving in the Army for a little over two years now. I was proud to sign off so she could go enlist early, and I am very grateful to all who serve and keep us safe and free.

From quiet homes and first beginning, Out to the undiscovered ends, There's nothing worth the wear of winning, But laughter and the love of friends.

Coming from a family with a few military connections I was always brought up to repect and honour our service men and women, both alive and passed. Our freedom is thanks to you and the rest of our armed forces. Thank you. May they all keep safe x

I visted this wall before. and it was so awful to see how many men died and watching the war vets cry their hearts out and rubbing their lost friends and conrads names in the cold black stone. I wanted to hug them so tightly and comfort them, to show them that I cared and would always have respect for everyone who served in the military.
