Joanie, I am only going to guess that you are not the nerd that I am. But, years ago there was a show called Stargate SG-1, and near later years, there was a race of self-replicating machines called the Replicators. The Replicators replicated themselves by using raw materials they took from all of the environments in their way. And, that is what your picture reminded me of.
