A bit more Contrast will improve detail viewing, and you'll probably have to apply -(Neg) Gamma to get it back to the lighter tone if you think it darkened the overall image too much.
Think about the photo before and after, never during. The secret is to take your time. You mustn't go too fast. The subject must forget about you. Then, however, you must be very quick.
