Louisiana designated the bald cypress official state tree in 1963. Unlike most conifers (which are evergreens), the bald cypress is deciduous (loses its needles in the fall - giving the tree a "bald" appearance). A majestic tree that grows in many parts of Louisiana, particularly in swampy areas. The seed cones are green maturing gray-brown, globular, and 2-3.5 cm in diameter. They have from 20 to 30 spirally arranged, four-sided scales, each bearing one or two (rarely three) triangular seeds. The number of seeds per cone ranges from 20 to 40. The cones disintegrate when mature to release the large seeds. The seeds are 5–10 mm long, the largest of any species in the cypress family, and are produced every year, but with heavy crops every three to five years. ... From Wikipedia .

I like all the detail in the cones - It's like they were intricately hand carved. There is a swamp with bald cypress in far southern Illinois, near where my husband is from, and when we visited it was fascinating. If I remember correctly it was the only one in Illinois and the farthest north bald cypress go.

Great Copy and Paste Marsha. Very informative indeed for those who were unaware. I of course knew all except the Heavy Crops every three to five years. That was News to me.

I use to have them at my previous home and the knees can be a pain in the yard. Bet you thought I was going to say _ _ _!

Ruined more than one Mower Blade on those Bad Boys. Thanks for sharing.

BTW: Check out my NEW AVATAR. Recent boat I purchased at the Cajun Pawn Shop. They told me it Doubled as a Dinner Table, but I just don't see it.

It's fine as usual, Marsha.... but you could crop off half the black on the right border. It definitely affects the overall balance of the cones and the lead in from the bottom left corner.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust
