The famous sculptured lion at Lucerne, Switzerland, designed by Thorwaldsen and dedicated in 1821 as a memorial to the Swiss Guards who fell defending Louis XVI in the attack of the mob on the Tuileries, Aug. 10, 1792, during the French Revolution. The animal, which is hewn out of the face of a rock, is represented as transfixed with a broken spear and dying, but still trying to protect with its paw a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis of France. Lucerne erected this monument in spite of massive protests by liberals from other parts of Switzerland The latin inscription HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI means "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss".

I've always wanted to see this, Eve - thanks! You captured it beautifully. The shadow and light dance adds to the feeling of the subject. The history of it is so meaningful. I'm very grateful you sent this out! - Patty

I can't believe it. Wait till Owd Sod Bob sees this. He will claim that is him lying there. Whoa.....wait a minute...is that the broken end of spear sticking out? I normally do not like pictures of statues but this one is really cool. Whoever created this knew their stuff. Great post.
