In Llandudno, North Wales, this is one of only three cable hauled street tramways still in existence world wide, and has been in operation for 104 years. The other two are in San Francisco USA and Lisbon, Portugal. Unlike the SF one, the cars are permanently fixed to the cable and are stopped and started by stopping and starting the cable. . . . . . .The semi-circular Bishops Quarry in this picture is on land given to the Bishop of Bangor by King Edward I in 1284 and sold by the church in 1891. The people are collecting white stones to write messages or their names on the hillside, which appears to be popular :) . . . . . . . Kodak V550.

Fantastic!! Beautiful color and clarity. Great history too. It took me a while to see what you mean about the name and stone but I see it now. I would love to be there. I´m a stone lover ...LOL...

Lovely picture Lyn! It is a while since I have been up the Great Orme. I have been to Llandudno on many occasions, so I think it is about time I headed towards the coast one weekend - this is just an hour and a half away so maybe I will head that way. Last time I was there - a seagull snatched the icecream from the man walking in front of me on the pier - I was bent over double laughing at him, although he did not find it that amusing! lol! Patti

Great clarity on this shot and what a wonderful piece of history to share. When we visited the Big Island of Hawaii they had the same custom - we put white rocks on the black lava. That's so interesting!

What an interesting narrative and a truly fascinating sight. I think that this custom of writing your name out in stones beats carving your initials in trunks of vulnerable trees or spray painting on buildings...although I have to say I do appreciate some of the graffiti artists that are around....at least this way it's not damaging to the site and it still gives off a feeling of satisfaction .."I was here" sort of thing..lol.. nice shot, Lyn.

Great shot of the tram. So colorful it almost looks out of place in front of the quarry. Wonderful narrative ... gives a new meaning to the expression "Written in Stone" :o)

You only forgot to mention the Gelmerbahn Lynn ! in Switzerland they operate one
and is the steepest in the world. It dates back to early 1900 something.

I believe the Gelmerbahn is of a different type to the ones I mentioned - I am not sure what the difference is, but may be something to do with the way the cables work and th fact that the other three are 'street' trams. There may be an expert could tell us :)
After the Gelmerbahn there is the one in Hong Kong and following that in third place is one in Wellington, New Zealand.I have been scared half to death on the HK and Wellington ones so will give Gelmerbahn a miss lol

There is a lot of interesting stuff to look at here, thanks to your informative description. The tram ride looks like it would be fun. I'm not sure how much fun lugging all those rocks around would be, but I suppose if it keeps people off the streets and out of trouble it is worthwhile as well.

I love it Eve. It’s got wonderful colour and so many fascinating things to peruse. That tram looks marvellous in its pretty paint job. And to top it all of you gave us a terrific intro.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes

I love this shot! Even though I live around 5 mins from the trams I have only been on the twice ever in my life ( will have to rectify that now)

I have though written my familys names in white stones above the quarry, and was trying to spot them in your pic lol. We used to go up the Orme a lot when the kids were small to do exactly that, and would give them a pile of stones to do their own creation. Sadly as they have got older they are not so keen on that,, although I can bet they will take their own kids up there to do it as well.

I love seeing your pictures of my area, as each time I get to see the area through new eyes.
