This is the follow up to my post of yesterday,Takiroa . I was disappointed in most of the shots I did - the caves are shallow and the sun was shining in, so I have chosen the best of each type, ochre and charcoal. It is amazing how the colour is still so strong, as they are exposed to the elements. The only barrier is a wide metal grating that has been put over the entrance in recent years to prevent people from adding their own 'art'.The red ochre drawing depicts Taniwha In Maori mythology, Taniwha are beings that live in deep pools in rivers, dark caves, or in the sea. Traditional Maori often used red to show a tapu (sacred) nature. . . .Panasonic DMC-FZ7. . Thank you for taking a look. I appreciate your views and opinions.

The interesting part is not the artistic quality of the drawings but as you say, the fact that the colour is till strong after so many centuries. Great Lyn, do some more (re)searching for us! :)

ancient wallpaper, huh? someone rude could say it looks like some scribbling, but the fact it's about 1000 years old makes it very interesting.

Yes those are conditions to shoot under... i would be interesting to know how they know it is so old, did they find any pottery on the spot or animal cooking remains ? Otherwise it could have been drawn like yesterday !

Very nice. Interesting narrative. Too bad people have to include their own art where ever they go.

You make such wonderful choices in your framings and presentations like the choice of red to emphasize what you said about the use of red in the drawings and the composition and the use of that particular font. It is more than amazing that these drawings have lasted that many centuries. Thank you for the background on them also. I love these posts where I am drawn to find out everything about the image and it is provided in such a wonderful way.

You will be led to the knowledge of the internal things which are invisible to you, by the external things which you see before you. . . . Even so then, we can represent to ourselves in thought the Author of all that is, by contemplating and admiring the (visible) things which He has made, and ever brings into being. - Hermes
