The Criterion Hotel, Oamaru, New Zealand was built in 1877,designed in the Victorian Italianate style by Oamaru architects, Forrester and Lemon. The hotel was closed when the district went "dry" in 1906, the bar reopening for business in 1998. The Criterion is now renowned for it's authentic beers and fine pork pies, in the tradition of the Victorian era. Like most of its counterparts the Criterion is constructed from the region’s famous limestone (or Oamaru Stone) and is registered under the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
