The Otira Viaduct , Arthurs Pass, NZ, part of State Highway 73 which winds its way high through the huge mountains of the Southern Alps, joining Westland and Canterbury. This very steep part of the road in the Otira valley crossed an old landslide path, always prone to rockfall, snow avalanches and landslides. Construction of the Viaduct began in January 1998 and it was completed in November 1999. The extremely heavy rainfall and cold conditions must have made it a miserable task in the winter. One worker lost his life. . . . The original coach road was constructed in 1865 from Christchurch, to allow access to the West Coast Gold Fields . . . . Otira Viaduct Facts: *Length: 440 metres *Height: 35 metres *Foundation depth: 25 metres *Concrete volume: 5000 cubic metres *Earth moved: 80 000 cubic metres *Gradient/steepness: 12% or 1 metre fall in every 9 metres *Cost: 25 million dollars . . . . . Panasonic DMC-FZ7 . Thanks for viewing:) . Any comments, advice or opinions always welcome and appreciated.

Excellent photo Lyn. It's amazing what can be done if someone wants to get from Point A to Point B bad enough. You've captured this perfectly with image and words. Love the angle. Congratulations.

It looks a grand sight from where you have taken this photo with those mountains in front blocking the way and the viaduct snaking through them. Beautiful!
