These Chinese Painted Quail (Coturnix chinensis, also knowd as Blue Painted Quail or King Quail)were another delight in the Tropical Forest I recently visited. Each one of these would fit in the palm of your hand, they grow to just 14cm maximum. They were quite difficult to photograph due to their rapid head movement. . . Not knowing what they were, I asked an obviously delighted man beside me who was importantly focusing his very impressive camera and clicking furiously. He gave me one of those looks especially reserved for dotty old people and informed me they were birds !! :) . . . LOL . . Panasonic DMC-FZ7. Thanks for looking, comments welcome.

Your commentary cracked me up. I know the type...big fancy camera; small plain brain. Bet your FZ7 captures are just as good as what he got. This is new to me. Never seen or heard of these before. Good one.

Great capture, Lyn. They look beautiful - Good clarity and colours. As for the guy with the camera, you should have said something like "Oh! and I thought these are carvings".

I've just about stopped laughing. People with impressive -looking cameras who think they are important are one of my pet hates. I've long suspected that they're ignoramuses with too much money. Lovely shot of this pair of quails - aren't they the cutest of birds? Their eggs are great in a special-occasion salad and a couple of them on a plate cooked in Chinese five-spice makes a great meal too! You certainly brought out the detail and metallic tones in their feathers in this - I especially love the way it picks up the colours of the minerals in the rock.

Looks like some of our quail that have frozen in winter. Just kidding. Love the blue tones and wasn't that a musical group? My mind wanders these days. It wonders as well. Great photo and nice capture Lyn. Do they go Bob Blue?

They are real cuties. I know them well. A good shot against the fast-moving heads. :)

A lovely shot, Lyn. The iridescent colours on the birds' breasts is just wonderful. I like the way you've picked out the blue in your frame. I also agree with many above about the brilliant narrative.

Well, this dotty old woman thinks they are quite wonderful little birds, sitting together so happily. From your description, I can now visualize them in the palms of someone's hand. The blue framing works really well too.

As a bird-lover I was pleasantly surprised when this shot just jumped right out at me! In all my studies and reading I have to tell you - I have NEVER seen these! Thank you for the treat! You did a wonderful job of composing and framing this! Bet Mr. Big-camera would be humbled if he saw your results!
