Nugget Point Lighthouse on the south-east corner of the South Island of New Zealand was built in 1869. Originally powered by oil,in 1949 it was converted to diesel-generated electric power, and then later connected to mains electricity. The original light lasted until 2006 when it was replaced with with a LED beacon mounted externally. It is 76 metres above sea level and the stone tower is 9 metres high. It was de-manned in 1989 when it was automated and is now monitored remotely from Maritime New Zealand in Wellington. It is a long but quite easy walk to the top and the views along the way are breathtaking. . . Panasonic DMC FZ28. Thank you for viewing. Comments always welcome and appreciated.
