Fishing boats protected from the sea by a breakwater which dates from the 1880's when the town of Oamaru was a busy port. More than 20 ships were wrecked here and many more were stranded. That all started to change in 1872 when work began on a huge concrete breakwater. In 1884 it was from here that New Zealand's first regular frozen meat steamer, the Elderslie, was commissioned to run solely between London and Oamaru. The glory days are over and the harbour area is now a registered historic area. . . . Taken with Panasonic DZ28. Thanks for your views and comments which are always valued.
