This is the blossom of the Kowhai Tree (Sophora microphylla) which is native to New Zealand. There are 2 varieties, very similar, this one dominant in the South Island, and Sophora tetraptera in the North Island. Two of our native birds Tuis and Kereru (wood pigeons)love the nectar but I have yet to have any visit my two Kowhai. I captured these lower branches this afternoon. The tree is taller than the house and varies in its blossom production. This year it is not very prolific. Thank you for viewing this iconic bit of New Zealand :) Comments always most welcome.
