I wish you all a Very Happy & Healthy New Year. May 2011 be as peaceful as this scene for us all
New Zealand is the second country to welcome the new year - we are now 3 hours into 2011! (the first is Kiribati)

For last year's words belong to last year's language
And next year's words await another voice.
And to make an end is to make a beginning.
~T.S. Eliot

I was intrigued by the rays in the sky to the right of this shot. They were more visible to the eye but I was pleased they appeared in the photo. This was one of my last shots of 2010 taken last evening with the sun setting behind me.
Thank you for viewing. Comments/critiques most welcome.

A happy New Year to you, as well, LynEve!

This is a great shot to end the year on. The sky is absolutely beautiful. The clouds add wonderful depth, and the rays of sunlight are a perfect touch. The sunlight shining on the boats and the blue water and sky create a nice, calm feeling when looking at this scene. Very nicely done!

What a pleasant scene to watch the old year fade away LE. Hard to believe you are up to your neck in summer and winter is knee deep in my part of the world. I think winter is arse deep in Owd Timer's part of the world.
Great photo.

Quite a beautiful scene. I am intrigued by those lines too. That was the first thing that I noticed at full screen. Could be some atmospheric condition I suppose. You can't see a beacon in the daytime. Wonderful clarity in this scene; the water is so reflective. This surely is the way to welcome a new year.
Happy New Year, LynEve. I pray it's a good one for all those in my life, which, of course, includes you too.

Beautiful, Eve. Serenity personified.
The HDR plug-in made the rays more discernible, as well as recovering cloud detail.
Still over 9 hours to go for me and Blue. Sure hope I can keep him from drinking tonight. He's the designated driver :-)

Lyn, those lines on the right are not sun rays, as crepuscular rays are solar rays. When we see crepuscular rays, we generally see them between the rising or, more often, the setting sun and us. In your photo here we are between the "rays" and the sun. Actually, if there are rays here, they are existing between those dark lines that seem to be coming off the clouds on the right. You'll notice that they aren't coming off the clouds in the middle or those on the left. That's because the perspective is foreshortened in the middle and the clouds on the left are too low. Also, things that are happening in the sky behind us likely are having an effect as well. So... any idea yet as to what those dark lines are?

I'm dropping in an extra comment here to give some visual space between my question and your thoughts, so as to not give away the answer just yet. By the way, did I mention that this is a very nice photo? The rule of thirds composition is very good and the subject matter is pleasant. This would make for a good desktop, no question.

Okay, if you guessed that the dark lines are actually shadows being thrown by the clouds then you're right. The clouds on the left may not be throwing shadows because, quite likely, there were thin clouds behind us on that side so that the sun's rays didn't have quite the same intensity. So these dark lines are the opposite of visual sun rays (crepuscular rays). It happens this way when we are between the light source and the view. So many people mentioned the lines I thought you might like to know. Cheers!

You are right, the rays of light is what really caught my attention when I first saw this photo. A great shot of the waterside with the boats.
