This was once a 120 metre high hill - Kildare Hill. Starting in 1864 Blue Lake was created by gold miners sluicing and chipping through the quartz and by 1933 it had become a 168 metre deep pit. The miners used an hydraulic lift to suck the water and gravel out to where it could be worked for gold.
The sides of the pit got too close to the town by 1934 and mining was stopped. The hole was allowed to fill with the blue water which is coloured by minerals.
I think it has a lunar appearance against the quartz tailings. This is directly opposite The Vulcan HotelThe Vulcan Hotel, just on the other side of the road. Thank you for viewing and any comments :)

Both very nice and interesting shots,Eve. The hdr plug-in recovers a fair amount of detail in those background hills on this one.

Geez, even man made formations look great in NZ. I guess you put the hotel out of business? lol Oh, I found the hotel on your other post. Maybe the link is not working.Lunar looking would be a great descriptive for this scene as you said.

I have fixed the link. I think it was not working before the image had been added to the New Images. :)

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . Lyn - No longer can it be said that there's gold in that hill! The miners left a beautiful scene. Thad

This is a fascinating old mining pit and a very fine image. The blue water and white rocks and sand create an almost otherworldly landscape. And that silver-gray sky is a perfect compliment to the scene below. Terrific shot, LynEve!

I'll bet the blue was a very vibrant color. We just tend to get greedy over our natural resources. I like the light color piles where they've dug. A very nice shot.
