The Maori name is Matakitaki (meaning To Gaze Upon)
It was formed in Lake Wanaka from remnants of glacial rock about 20,000 years ago. A Conservation area, it is is home to native mountain ghekos and giant ground wetas. There is Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Salmon to be fished from the lake.
The Poplars at the edge of the Rippon Vineyard appear to be standing guard :) Wanaka is at the same latitude as the Bordeaux region in France, and Rippon is well know for its Pinot noir and Riesling.
Taken with Canon 450D. I had to crop some off it after straightening the lake horizon. Thanks for viewing. Comment/opinions always welcome.

What a great gift of nature. Thanks for narrative, Lyn. Great photo as usual from you. This is very hard to compose, because the lines of the lake shore are not quite parallel. This cheats eyes and look leaned to right, though it is quite well levelled. Great postwork you've done.

Just exquisite, Eve. Those Poplars make a great lead-in and accentuate apparent depth.

LynEve, I do believe that you could stumble and accidentally press the shutter release on your camera and still come away with a spectacular landscape photo. :)

The saturated colors and contrast in this shot are very pleasing to the eye and boost the wow factor. A beautifully composed scene, as well. Outstanding work!

Crikey this is a beautiful shot; a strong contrast in the serenity of the view and subject matter but very intense in it's treatment and character. The water and sky are in competition for dominance amongst the solid mountains and island, and the HDR gives it a real punch. Nice job and Kia Ora, Lyn.
