I thought maybe those of you interested in birds may find this of interest :)
The Variable Oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor, torea or toreapango)is found only in New Zealand.
It is also known as the Black Oystercatcher, measures 48 centimetres and weighs 725 grams.
Once in serious decline, they are now protected. They live for up to 27 years. Taken with Canon 450D.

Lyn, I think this is a wonderful capture, and how neat that you were able to spot this beautiful bird, and capture it so well. I'm so glad they are protected, and what a life span they have.

The water looks like it may be a bit chilly for this Oystercatcher! Very interesting beak on him.

They must find the conditions of NZ so amenable to their life styles that they feel no need to migrat. Great shot!

There are oyster catchers here too but they have a white underbelly. Nice shot of the bird standing in the water searching for ... oysters :)

Is this an estimate or do you know this for sure, Lyn? LOL!

Love this capture of this black 'fisher'.

Very nicely composed, surrounded by the moving surf. Interesting informative narrative. A pleasure to see and learn about distant wildlife species.
