The concrete breakwater takes a battering. This was taken from almost at the end of the fishing wharf seen in THIS photo. This breakwater was constructed in 1872 to protect the harbour. Previously there had been more than 20 shipwrecks. This is what it looks like when it is CALM
Dredging of the inner harbour which is done regularly was completed just 2 weeks ago but it is expected the havoc caused by this polar storm and high seas will have undone the work, and also the breakwater itself will have to be inspected for damage.
Thanks for viewing. Comments very welcome.

For anyone interested in history this Newspaper article from 1867 is a good read. Rather long winded. It appears the idea of a breakwater was not welcomed by all at the time.

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . Wow! You used to get ALL the news and not just dribs and drabs or a few paragraphs. That was interesting, even just to see such an old clipping. And it is interesting to see this image as it relates to that article. Maybe they were verbose because they didn't have such beautiful pictures to print along with their stories. I expect this saved some ships from being destroyed. Amazing difference between this and the 'calm' image.

Such a breakwater should be able to withstand a storm. Nice capture of the sea breaking over it. I prefer the calm view for obvious reasons :)

Once again, LE, I'll ask the same question as on yesterday's posting. Why don't you walk your skinny butt out to the end of the jetty so that we can see some nice close up's of the breakers? You are such a wuss. When I was a 72 year old woman six months ago I crawled around in rat infested basements to get shots like this.

Excellent energy. Love the contrasts, the crisp foreground and fierce waves. I too can't help but think of the sounds and feeling of the water as you stood there.
