Wednesday 22nd February 2012 is the first anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake that took the lives of 185 people. New Zealand will remember with memorial services. For most of the rest of the world it is 'old news'.
Please spare a thought for those who lost their loved ones, their treasures, homes, jobs and their peace of mind. Also the 4300 injured, many seriously, who are still struggling with recovery. Demolition continues on 1400+ buildings and the city is changed for ever. Lives are changed for ever, and the aftershocks continue still, every day.
In abandoned suburbs waiting for the bulldozers nature encroaches, the grass grows high and the roses in once immaculate gardens run wild, sneaking through windows, doors and cracks. It is eerily quiet, the birds don't sing.
The people of Christchurch are strong and resilient, they love their city. One day it will again be a proud and beautiful place.

For all earthquake victims, anywhere in the world, a white rose, symbol of light.
Kia Kaha

Beautiful flower and narrative Lyn. I have seen on TV the destruction caused by the earthquake. It was terrible. A wonderful thought for the victims and a city that was ravaged in a horrific manner in a matter of minutes.

A beautiful image and a message not to be forgotten. It may not be in the news (too many important elections take center stage) but plenty of us still remember and hope for better days for the people of Christchurch... and Japan... and New Orleans... and Joplin, Missouri... and Turkey... are there enough roses to go around?

I will remember too Western MA, June 1st, 2011, but that was far less devastating than most of those other earthquakes, though it was quite devastating for those who incurred loss of life and destruction never-the-less. It was something that isn't seen around these parts and if that seemed horrible to us. I can only begin to understand the degree of despair and destruction that was there in NZ on that fateful day and the repair that is required for renewal as I view the path of broken trees and the rebuilding of houses every time I travel down the road a few miles. Such a life changing happening. Yes, we will remember and your white rose is a lovely symbol of the peace that now prevails after the catastrophe has past.

Natural Disasters sounds like an oxymoron...natural seems like it should be good, normal....there is nothing normal and definitely not good with what occurred in Christchurch and all other places in the world in 2011.

Excellent narrative GE and a white rose as the symbol...works for me.

Thank you.
