FRAMED VERSION here - my preference but suspect unframed may be more liked here. Would really like your opinions :) Taken with Panasonic DMC FZ28. I made several attempts to desaturate and retain the mistiness. Not sure that I succeeded.

No frame for me.

Then again, the framed version might look better.. if you cropped the base image. Which is, the first thing that came to my pea brain.

That lone white boat creating a merger with the right-hand side is a distraction and mitigates the strength of your (somewhat) triangulated composition.

Here's what I am referring to..

"Harbour Greys" - Shadow/Highlights adjusted and Cropped

Notice.. aside from tightening up the composition ... that the blacks are deeper now, via a Curves Adjustment layer in conjunction with the Shadow/Highlight stuff. Contrast improvement in short.

Desaturating an image.

Much prefer the other methods of B & W conversion. Lose all of the wonderful range(s) of tonalities of the various colours and colour channels if simply desaturating. (Erhm.. I think ... it's early? :oP)

Creative suggestion(s).

Can always do a B & W conversion, then.. employ the Diffuse Glow/Diffuse filter for a nice misty look and feel.

That said..

Some cleanup in aisle C (for composition, on the note of the cropping alone) ... which was not so big of a thing ... and your photo here was readily elevated in my humble opinion.

I'm a fan of framing but for this I think I prefer the without version, it's a lovely image and I like the B&W. Tigs♥ =^..^=

Lyn, my first impression was. "WOW." What a terrific picture. I too like the unframed version the best.

The more I stared at it, though, I too noticed that white boat and wondered about it.

You have composed this to a widescreen monitor size (1680x1050) and respecting that brings up a situation concerning the cropping out of the white boat. You may not want to crop and resize to 1680x1050 due to what all you may have to lose from your picture to do so. Since the boat sits low enough in the water, below the horizon line, you could consider a clone to remove it.

But taking it out could also leave your right side a little empty.

Or, you can leave it alone and have this beautiful picture just as it is. ~~ John

No frame for me either. I only would have cropped out that piece of boat at the right...but that's just me...

Really love this B/W scene :o)

I agree with everyone about no frame here and I also agree about the white boat - the tones in this are really nice.

I too like the unframed version the best LE.

I like the foggy look to the entire scene. I can live with or do without the white boat.

What else can I possibly say? I thought it looked pretty impressive when I opened it up. I don't think a crop was entirely necessary. Just a content-aware fill would have gotten rid of the one boat on the right side of the image. I don't see much difference in shadow/highlight in Les' version and I do like it frameless or maybe with a different frame.

/\ Ok, I do'ed it.

(Hope you don't mind, was mucking about with your image earlier and had kept this on my desktop as a reminder to show you/link to.)

Save that of the actual B & W conversion being a quad-toning, then, a judicious application of the Diffuse Glow filter to address the power lines to an extent.
