Taken with 60mm macro lens. Canon 450D.
I experimented with different settings and lenses indoors and outside. The rose was an afterthought, plucked as I made my way round the garden looking for the right light.
Decided on an indoor shot in the end.

Caveats?
Undecided, really.. as to whether the crop is a tad tight.
And it has not gone unnoticed by me, that you were working with the physical constraints/size of the wood top. Just can't quite shake the thought of a bit more breathing room to the right of the rose might be an improvement.
That said..
Good good control and handle on the technical considerations. Lighting is nice, too.
p.s. Then, it hits me.. the size of the sides of your border/framing.
See if the following joke reference makes sense..
As an added punishment for prisoners.. jail house authorities are considering placing the bars on the prison inmate uniforms.. horizontal.
('Cause.. then the prisoners would go around thinking that they are 'fat'. :oP)
To my eyes, and mind.. with the border width/size at the sides as presented.. kind of, sort of ... fights with the vertical lines of the bottle and the hanging watches.
Downloaded and cropped on the above thought(s) ... looks better?

Wonderful concept excellently done! The rose may have been an afterthought but it makes a sweet, colorful addition to the composition as a whole.

Congrats on your 1st place in the contest, Lyn. That sure is a great shot. I love that song, and all of Jim Croce's work. He would have had many many more great songs if he hadn't died way back in the 70's.
