Kōwhai are unique to New Zealand, one of our few deciduous native trees.
It has many medicinal uses and yellow dye can be obtained from the flowers.
The blossoms are a herald of Spring and greatly loved by bellbids and tuis.
They can grow up to 40 feet. This one towers above our house - its falling leaves and blossoms are a nuisance clogging the roof gutters.
I have taken better shots in past Springs but I like this one from this year for its true beautiful colour, even though it is a bit windblown.
In Maori 'kowhai' means yellow.
Thank you for viewing. Comments are always welcome and I hope these golden blossoms warm your Friday :)
