Wednesday was New Zealand's National Holiday, WAITANGI DAY.
In the small Otago town of Oamaru commemorations of the arrival of Robert Falcon Scott's vessel, the Terra Nova, 100 years ago were also began. It returned from the Antarctic Expedition on February 10th 1913 with the news Scott and his companions had died. The small port was chosen above larger ones to keep the news from spreading until the rest of the world had been told via the telegram that was sent from Oamaru. The Harbourmaster's small wooden lookout shed still stands today and it is easy to imagine his puzzled surprize at the unannounced arrival.
The frigate on the horizon is HMNZS Otago which visited for the day. Groups of 8 were ferried out to it in inflatable boats to go on board, while many local small craft enjoyed a day's sailing.
