The Kiwifruit is native to China and was first planted in New Zealand in 1906. It was known as Chinese Gooseberry here until 1962 when it was renamed Kiwifruit due to it being brown skinned and fuzzy and was thought to resemble our national bird. Outside of Australasia it is now marketed under the brand name Zespri. Exports from here exceed local consumption. Apart from being eaten as a fruit it makes wonderfu jam and is a great accompanyment to steak, acting as a tenderiser as an added bonus. Kiwifruit contain twice the amount of Vitamin C in oranges.
Also they are useful for making kaleidoscopes :)
I still think of them as Chinese Gooseberries :)
