The waves crash over the breakwater very often, at times much higher than this. I just happened to be there when the light was good this time so got a bit clicker-happy !
The port of Oamaru was once the busiest in New Zealand. This breakwater construction was completed in 1884. Before then there had been 20 wrecks, the worst event being in 1868 when a fierce storm smashed up three ships and a new jetty.
10,000-ton freighters once came here, but by the early 1970's conventional coastal shipping was taken over by the interisland rail ferries.
Now the harbour is home to pleasure boats and fishing boats, and a rowing club. And our course, the penguins.
