Lake Alexandrina on the left and Tekapo on the right.
This was taken from 1,029 metres (3,376 ft) at Mount John University Observatory for astronomical research.A two photo stitch.
In 2012 an area of 430,000 hectares (1,700 sq miles) around the observatory was declared the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association, one of only four in the world.
Unfortunately we left it a bit late in the day and the light was fading.
