Spreading Waters is the translation of Waihola, the name of this tidal fresh water lake 40 km south of Dunedin in Otago, in New Zealand's South Island. Its area is 9 square kilometres. There is a small township (pop. approx 200) and it is a popular holiday and picnic place, and rowing venue.
Waihola is an unusual Maori word as there is no "l" in the Maori alphabet. It probably was originally Waihora.
In the goldrush days a paddle steamer, the Betsy Douglas, used to transport prospectors across the lake then they headed for the hills and on to Gabriel's Gully.
We passed it at about 6pm today driving home from a trip south and just had to stop and take a few shots of the sunset. The colours changed so quickly. In 3 minutes (5.52 to 5.55, we were in a hurry !) I clicked 26 times and every one seems to have different hues.
I have happy memories of picnics here as a child.
