Sumner Beach, a coastal suburb of Christchurch,New Zealand was named after the then Archbishop of Canterbury in 1849. The rocks are volcanic lava deposits.
This area was very badly affected by the February 2011 earthquake and in June the same year they were hit by another quake of almost the same magnitude. Many of the cliffs behind this peaceful scene collapsed and they are still cordoned off, mainly by shipping containers to prevent the road below suffering rock falls. Driving out to this area the quake-caused bumps and ridges in the road could be felt quite distinctly.
