The Church of The Blessed Sacrament (also known as Christchurch Basilica) was one of the many churches damaged in 2011 by the earthquakes. This is some of the salvaged articles against a photo of the damage (see a car buried under the rubble)
There is a short video HERE which shows this church at the beginning. Take note of the statue of the Virgin Mary looking through a window. It turned 180 degrees during the quake, leaving her looking out over the city instead of into the Basilica.(This video was shown, without commentary, at the official memorial service, it is quite heartbreaking)
To rebuild the Basilica would cost approx NZ$100M. Already NZ$3M has been spent de-constructing and saving what could be.
I took this in 'Quake City' an exhibition centre run by Canterbury Museum, which contains many artifacts, photos and information about the tragedy.Panasonic TZ60.
Comments always appreciated.
