Taken from the summit of the Lindis Pass which links the Mackenzie Basin with Central Otago in New Zealand's South Island. 971 metres above sea level.
Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve was formed in 1976 and was one of the first tussock reserves in New Zealand. You will see no trees here, just the brown tussock and in winter it is often covered in snow.
63km of State Highway 8 crosses the reserve, which was featured as part of Fangorn Forest in Lord Of The Rings.
The pass was used by Māori and traversed by Otago surveyor John Turnbull Thomson in 1857, who named it for his home in north-east England, Lindisfarne.
Panasonic TZ60, heading away from Central Otago.
