A New Zealand Fur Seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) basking on the rocks.
NZ Fur seals are now a protected species both here and in Australia.
They were a source of food and clothing to the early Polynesions but were then driven almost to extinction when European sealers arrived in the 19th century. They can be quite agressive if annoyed but I was able to quietly get quite close to this one.
Kekeno is their Maori name.
