New Zealanders have observed Anzac Day on April 25 since 1916. It commemorates the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli, Turkey, during World War I in 1915.
This event, also observed in Australia, honours all New Zealanders who have served and who are serving their country in wars and conflicts.
There are dawn services, and ANZAC Day parades. Shops and hotels are closed until 12 noon.
